BRIEF REPORT ON

SIXTH IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE SYSTEM OF SYSTEMS

The 6th IEEE international conference on System of Systems Engineering (SOSE 2011) was held June 27-30, 2011 at Sheraton Uptown in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. The main theme of conference was Cloud Computing, Smart Grid and Cyber Security.  Over 93 authors from 6 countries such as US, Japan, UK, Brazil, India and Spain participated in this conference. The conference had 8 keynote speakers covering key themes of the conference as related to system of systems engineering. The program of conference was divided to 22 sessions such as SOS Engineering, Smart Grid, Cloud and Cyber Security, Net-Centric Systems, SOS Dependability, Mobile Systems, Modeling and simulation, Cloud Management, System of Systems Security, Maritime Navigation Applications, Cloud Computing, Energy Planning and Management, INCOSE AWG Session and Health and Medical Systems. There was a session on the BKCASE (Stevens Institute of Technology and Naval Postgraduate School and US DoD initiative on systems engineering)

In the first day, Dr. Les Shephard from University of Texas at San Antonio talked about “Realizing a Global Energy Future Creating a Low Carbon Energy System”. The second keynote speaker in the same day was Prof. Ravi Sandhu from University of Texas at San Antonio who talked about “The Challenge of Data and Application Security and Privacy”. The authors in this day talked about SOS Engineering, Smart Grid, Cloud and Cyber Security, Net-Centric Systems, SOS Dependability and V&V, Mobile Systems.

In the second day, Elizabeth (Liz) Porter from Lockheed Martin talked about “The Energy-Security Equation”. Also Robert J. Glass as the second keynote speaker from Sandia National Lab talked about – “Complex Adaptive Systems of Systems (CASoS) Engineering: Mapping Aspirations to Problem Solutions”. In this day, there was a panel which talked about BKCASE (Body of Knowledge and Curriculum to Advance Systems Engineering). The authors in the day talked about Modeling and simulation, Cloud Management, System of Systems Security, Maritime Navigation Applications, SOS Engineering and Cloud Computing. Also in this day, the conference banquet held and the best papers introduced by Professors Ricardo Valerdi and Man-Tak Shing, Technical Co-chair of the conference. In this ceremony Prof. Mo Jamshidi founder of the SOSE Conference announced that the conference will be held every two years from now.

In the third day, the first keynote speaker was Mary Lynne Nielsen from IEEE Standards Association who talked about “Silver Lining or Not?: IEEE's Efforts in Cloud Computing”. Anthony Maiello the second keynote speakers from GE Energy Services talked about “An Integrated Energy Future: Enabling Pervasive Systems Solutions”. The last keynote speaker in the third day was Dr. Alkis Konstantellos from EC who talked about “European R&D initiatives in Advanced Systems towards Systems of Systems”. The authors in the day talked about Energy Planning and Management, Cloud Computing, INCOSE AWG Session and Health and Medical Systems.

In the fourth and the last day, Dr. Jim F. Riker from Air Force Research Laboratory as the last keynote speakers in the conference talked about “AFRL Technology for Integrated Systems”. Also the authors in this day talked about Engineering Case Studies. Overall, the conference ended on a high note with good quality papers and lots of beneficial discussion to further empower the transition of SOSE into an engineering discipline.

The audience became aware of the new EC SoSE Area imitative of Europe-US and a first step in reaching out to US to collaborate on bridging the gaps between SoS and SoSE. Future workshops on both sides of the Atlantic will be a cornerstone of this effort to help realize the “Engineering” of SoS.

Contributed Papers:

Papers should be five to six pages in length, in standard two-column IEEE Conference Proceedings format [Paper format: Doc or PDF]. We will also accept three-page poster papers (in two-column format). Detailed instructions for paper/poster submission and format can be found in the paper submission page. Invitations will be made to the authors of the best papers to submit an extended version of papers to the following journals or book chapters for the CRC Taylor-Francis SOSE Book Series:

1. IEEE Systems Journal (http://www.systemsjournal.org)

2. Journal of Enterprise Transformation  (http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/UJET)

3. AutoSoft Journal (http://wacong.org/autosoft/auto/)

Invited Sessions:

Invited sessions are to provide a forum for focused discussions on new topics, or innovative applications of established approaches. An invited session consists of four papers that must be electronically submitted for review using the same procedure for contributed papers. A proposal must include: (1) Title, (2) Organizers, (3) Brief Statement of Purpose for the session, and (4) A List of Authors and Paper Titles. The session organizers must submit proposals to the Tutorial or Organized Sessions Chair (brian.sauser@stevens.edu) and copy to  the Technical co-chairs (shing@nps.edu or rvalerdi@mit.edu)  by March 21st, 2011.

Tutorial Proposals:

Proposals for half-day tutorials must be submitted to the Tutorials Chair. Proposals that address topics related to the conference theme. Proposals must include (1) Title, (2) Organizers, (3) Objectives and Topics, (4) Intended Audience, and (5) List of Speakers. Proposals must be submitted to the to the Tutorial and Organized Sessions Co-Chair (brian.sauser@stevens.edu) and copy to the Technical co-chairs (shing@nps.edu or rvalerdi@mit.edu) by March 21st, 2011.
